"Honoring Idigenous Heritage: National Indigenous Peoples Month"
In line with Proclamation No. 1906, issued on October 5, 2009, which officially declares October as ‘National Indigenous Peoples’ Month, the Philippine Embassy in Canada joins the nation in celebrating this important occasion under the theme “Weaving Culture, Enriching Future: Empowering Indigenous Communities as Bedrock of Sustainable Development.” This year also marks the 28th anniversary of the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act (IPRA), a landmark legislation that upholds the rights, dignity, and cultural integrity of Indigenous peoples in the Philippines.
This celebration also emphasizes empowerment as a key to sustainable development. Indigenous communities have long practiced ways of living that protect the environment while meeting human needs. Recognizing their rights, supporting their education, and ensuring their participation in decision-making allow these communities to thrive without losing their identity. When Indigenous Peoples are empowered, development becomes more inclusive, ethical, and grounded in respect for both people and nature.
Ultimately, National IP Month is a call for unity and responsibility. It encourages all Filipinos, especially the youth, to appreciate Indigenous cultures and stand against discrimination and marginalization. By valuing Indigenous knowledge and supporting their communities, we help build a future that is not only progressive but also just, resilient, and deeply rooted in cultural respect.
